ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Ravenwood High School

Rex Gainer

Rex Gainer, son of Krista and Jay Gainer, is a junior at Ravenwood High School and this week’s Kerr & Co. Realty Athlete of the Week.

He is a member of the Varsity Boys Basketball Team and plays the position of point guard. This season, he broke the RHS three point record when he hit nine three-pointers in one game.

Gainer started playing basketball when he was only four years old. He credits his father for his introduction to the sport.

When asked what inspires him to continue training and competing he said, “I train and compete so I can continue my basketball career in college and so my seventh grade brother doesn’t become better than me.”

RHS Head Basketball Coach Patrick Whitlock said of Gainer, “Rex has evolved into one of the better players in our district as a junior. He is a great shooter and has worked hard on other aspects of his game. He is an outstanding student and epitomizes what we look for when representing our program.”

One of his biggest role models is Derrick Rose, a professional basketball player for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Gainer said he looks up to him because “he sets a great example of how to be resilient.”

Gainer describes himself as hardworking, intelligent and dedicated. Outside of basketball, he enjoys playing golf and the video game NBA 2K19.

After graduating from RHS, he hopes to continue his basketball career in college.
