Kate Barker, daughter of Brenda and Ken Barker, is a senior at Ravenwood High School and this week’s Kerr & Co. Realty Athlete of the Week.
She is a hard-working student and athlete, playing for the Varsity Softball Team.
One of her biggest passions outside of softball is taking care of children who have been orphaned. Barker was once an orphan herself, until she was adopted by Brenda and Ken. “I was an orphan and I ended up with a great family… I want every kid to have a family,” she said.
Barker said her biggest accomplishment in life has been moving to a new country. She learned English, and while she said it was “one of the hardest things” she’s done, she loved it.
Her favorite class at RHS is Art with Mrs. Douglas. “I’m not great at art,” Barker said, “but she makes it really fun and helped me to get better at it.”
Her two top role models are her parents, Brenda and Ken. “My parents have adopted 11 kids from around the world,” she said. “They are amazing people.”
Coach Brown, RHS’s Softball Coach, said of Barker, “Kate has been a consistent leader for us. She has been an all-around great player defensively and ate the plate. Kate is unselfish and does anything she can to help her team. Her work ethic, positive attitude and drive have made a huge impact on our program.”
After graduating from RHS this spring, Barker will attend Trevecca Nazarene University to study social work. One day, she would like to work in an orphanage.
