Election Commission now part of system to share information about online threats and vulnerabilities

WILLIAMSON COUNTY ELECTION COMMISSION

Williamson County Administrator of Elections Chad Gray and the Williamson County Election
Commission are now part of a new partnership with the Elections Infrastructure Information Sharing and Analysis Center (EI-ISAC), which shares information on potential vulnerabilities of online election systems.

EI-ISAC, which is a part of Center for Internet Security, Inc. (CIS), offers elections-focused cyber defense tools, including threat and vulnerability monitoring, incident response and remediation and tools for implementing security best practices.

“This new way to quickly share information with our local, state and national counterparts offers us the latest information about known or potential threats,” Chad Gray said. “I’m proud this new layer of protection doesn’t cost our county one penny.”

Williamson County election officials made the decision after a recommendation from the Division of
Elections which is a part of the Tennessee Secretary of State’s office.

“Government entities are targeted by cyber threats every day. Disrupting elections is certainly a goal of people who want to threaten the very foundation of our form of government. This level of information sharing will help ensure threats are not only contained but quickly thwarted,” Secretary of State Tre Hargett said.

EI-ISAC offers routine threat alerts while also allowing various entities to share best practices on
cybersecurity and cyber hygiene with other jurisdictions nationally across every branch of government.

Alerts include information about weaknesses in software, such as a warning issued earlier this week: Multiple Vulnerabilities in Adobe Flash Player Could Allow for Remote Code Execution (APSB18-19) . Another warned about a browser: A Vulnerability in Mozilla Firefox Could Allow for Arbitrary Code Execution . More information is available online at cisecurity.org/ei-isac/.

Williamson County has the State Primary and County General election coming up on Aug. 2. The state General Election and Municipal elections for Fairview, Nolensville and Thompson’s Station are set for Nov. 6.
