GAME OF THE WEEK: Summit breaks away late against Independence to claim ‘Border Battle’

Game of the Week brought to you by Vanderbilt Orthopaedics

The Summit Spartans’ surprise 34-15 victory over rival Independence Eagles came as only a “Border Battle” could.

It’s only the school’s second over Indy, who once won the state title for Class 5A and is a perennial challenger for Region 6-6A, which hoists WillCo heavyweights Brentwood, Ravenwood, Franklin and Centennial.

Summit often gets overlooked in WillCo, like their region mate Page, but in Friday’s win, nobody was looking past this Spartans team.

After a 9-8 first half that featured the typical first-game-of-the-year sloppiness (the Eagles grabbed a safety at one point), the Spartans leaned in on sophomore quarterback Destin Wade, improved dramatically from his freshman campaign, and coverted wide receiver George Odimegwu to power the offense on some clock-munching drives.

The senior college prospect hauled in four passes for 71 yards in his first game at his new position, with a score coming in the first quarter.

Destin’s twin brother Keaten rushed in a touchdown midway through the third quarter to give Ole Sparty a 14-8 advantage, met immediately by Indy QB Ethan Cash (16/31, 172 yards, two TDs) throwing a laser to Jaxson Campbell to get Indy back in front.

But it was Summit who would close out the game with a bang, scoring three unanswered touchdowns (two scrambles for TDs for the Wade brothers, a game-sealing pick-six for budding sophomore star Brady Pierce) that stunned the visitors from Thompson’s Station and left Summit with its second “Border Battle” win.

Destin Wade finished with 12/19 passes completed and 155 yards and an air touchdown to go with 82 yards rushing and a ground score, while Keaten added 63 yards on the ground and 31 in receiving.

Indy’s Caedon Williams rushed for 106 on the night.
